Behind the same walls where the painter from Lerida Salvador
Sabaté lived until his death, his family has installed the work
of the artist, creating a house-museum that also offers an
intense programme of cultural and educational activities.
Sabaté, who was born on Maials, moved to Fraga when he was 17
years old and lived there until his death in 1984. His father
was a metalworker and his grandfather a stonemason, and this
descendant of craftsmen felt attracted to painting from an early
age. Although he had a minimal artistic formation in Barcelona
and Madrid during his youth, he is considered a self-taught
painter, this continued learning process being something which
is reflected in the works he created throughout his life.
Sabaté delved into many styles during his career, the realist
phase being supplemented by geometric and symbolic traits
characteristic of some of the dominant currents of the 20th
century. The themes of his work are also varied: portraits,
landscapes and urban vistas and more dreamlike works make up the
bulk of his production.
